8-Circuit Model

The 8-Circuit Model is Dr. Timothy Leary's map of consciousness — eight distinct circuits or mini-brains — later refined and propounded by Robert Anton Wilson. I references the model in The Book of Good Practices as a structural map for the states magical work actually moves through.

The map

Leary originally named eight circuits; Wilson expanded and popularized the framework. The core claim: human consciousness is not a single unified thing but a stack of circuits, each responsible for a different operational layer. Lower circuits handle survival, territory, and symbol manipulation; higher circuits handle state-shifting, neurosomatic awareness, and the layers of consciousness that mystical traditions have always mapped differently but consistently.

The circuits in broad strokes: - Circuit 1: bio-survival, infant-level safety and threat - Circuit 2: emotional-territorial, dominance and submission - Circuit 3: symbolic-linguistic, thinking and language - Circuit 4: socio-sexual, adult identity and role - Circuit 5: neurosomatic, body-state awareness, somatic bliss - Circuit 6: metaprogramming, the mind observing itself - Circuit 7: morphogenetic, pattern and genetic-level consciousness - Circuit 8: quantum or non-local, the upper limit of the map

Why magical practitioners use it

Magical work moves between circuits. A sigil activation is a circuit 3-to-5 jump; daemonic contact is often circuit 6 or higher; possession and deep altered states hit circuit 7 and 8. Having a map lets you name the state you are trying to reach instead of just describing it as "trance" or "altered."

my use of the model in The Book of Good Practices is practical: it gives a shared vocabulary for the inner shifts that practitioners are actually working with, without pretending there is one right tradition-specific language.

How to use it

Treat it as a map, not a territory. The circuits are heuristics — real subjective experience does not arrive in eight neat boxes. But when you need to communicate what state you are in or trying to reach, the model is sharper than most alternatives.

Eight-circuit maps pair with the chakra system (different model, overlapping territory), with planetary correspondences (circuit-to-planet mappings exist and are worth reading critically), and with Crowley's Thelemic framework that Wilson himself worked inside.

Dr. Leary created a model of the brain and nervous system, later refined and propounded by Robert Anton Wilson, consisting of eight potential circuits or mini-brains.

The 8-Circuit Model sits alongside chakra systems, Thelemic frameworks, and the broader consciousness-map literature I draws on across my work.
